Why Did the Gold Price Fall Today?
The All-Pakistan Gems and Jewellers Sarafa Association cut 24K gold by Rs1,600 to Rs439,036 per tola on Saturday 17 October, giving back part of Friday’s Rs2,800 rise. The 10-gram rate fell Rs1,372 to Rs376,402, and the association’s reference world price slipped $16 to $4,165 an ounce.
World gold failed to hold above $4,200 at the end of the week. After touching about $4,198 on Friday, it eased as traders weighed hot US inflation data against fading bets on an immediate US rate rise, leaving gold about 0.5% lower for the week.
The broader picture is unchanged: markets see only about a 28% chance of a US rate rise at the 27–28 October Federal Reserve meeting but around an 89% chance by December, after US producer prices rose at their fastest pace in about four and a half years. Fed officials have been cautious, with Chair Kevin Warsh saying he does not pre-judge meetings.
Silver also eased, falling Rs81 to Rs6,175 per tola and Rs69 to Rs5,294 per 10 grams. With no announcement on Sunday, Saturday’s rates remain in force until Monday.
International Gold Price and the Sarafa Premium
International gold settled at $4,165 per ounce, down $16. At the interbank dollar rate of Rs277.02, that equals Rs432,671 per tola. The local Sarafa rate of Rs439,036 is Rs6,365 (1.5%) above that world-price conversion, a premium that reflects the cost of dollars and local demand.
