Gold This Week: What Moved the Sarafa Rate
Over the week from 12 to 17 October, Pakistan’s 24K Sarafa rate moved between Rs437,836 and Rs440,636 per tola and ended at Rs439,036, Rs900 lower than on Monday 12 October. The low came on Wednesday 14 October and the high on Friday 16 October.
US inflation set the tone. September consumer prices rose 3.7% from a year earlier, with energy prices up about 20%, and producer prices jumped 6.3%. That briefly pushed world gold down to about $4,073, its lowest level of the week, before falling US bond yields and a weaker dollar helped it recover.
Expectations of a US interest rate rise this month faded as the week went on: the chance of a move at the 27–28 October Federal Reserve meeting fell to about 17% from about 42% on Wednesday, after Fed Chair Kevin Warsh signalled a patient, gradual approach. Spot gold still ended the week about 0.7% lower, settling near $4,165 an ounce on Friday.
Oil was the other big story. Brent crude rose about 4.8% for the week and US crude about 10.9%, after Iranian attacks on ships in the Strait of Hormuz and fighting in Yemen raised fears for shipping through the Bab el-Mandeb Strait. Higher oil prices feed inflation worries but also add safe-haven demand for gold.
International Gold Price and the Sarafa Premium
International gold settled at $4,165 per ounce, down $16. At the interbank dollar rate of Rs277.02, that equals Rs432,671 per tola. The local Sarafa rate of Rs439,036 is Rs6,365 (1.5%) above that world-price conversion, a premium that reflects the cost of dollars and local demand.
