Gold Chain Designs and Their Making Charges
The style of a chain changes how much labour goes into it, and therefore its making charge. Typical ranges in Pakistani shops:
| Chain style | What it looks like | Typical making charge |
|---|---|---|
| Box chain | Square links; strong and popular for daily wear | 6 – 10% |
| Rope chain | Twisted links that catch the light; heavier for its width | 8 – 12% |
| Curb / Cuban chain | Flat interlocking links; common in men’s chains | 7 – 12% |
| Singapore chain | Fine twisted links with a liquid look; light ladies’ chain | 8 – 12% |
| Figaro chain | Pattern of long and short links | 8 – 12% |
| Snake chain | Smooth, flexible tube of tiny plates; hard to repair if kinked | 10 – 15% |
| Handmade (desi) chain | Made by local karigars; traditional patterns | 12 – 20% |
Making charges are set by each jeweller; use these ranges to judge whether a quote is reasonable.
Ladies, Men’s and Children’s Chains: Length and Weight
| Chain | Usual length | Usual weight | 22K price today |
|---|---|---|---|
| Children’s chain | 14 – 16 inches | 1 – 3 g | Rs36,883 – Rs110,648 |
| Ladies’ daily chain | 16 – 18 inches | 2 – 6 g | Rs73,765 – Rs221,295 |
| Chain for a locket or pendant | 18 – 20 inches | 3 – 8 g | Rs110,648 – Rs295,060 |
| Men’s chain | 20 – 24 inches | 8 g – 2 tola | Rs281,648 – Rs821,273 (21K) |
The same design gets heavier as it gets longer and thicker, so ask for the weight of the exact length you want rather than a catalogue figure.
Italian, Imported and Hollow Gold Chains
Many chains sold as “Italian” or imported are 18K (stamped 750) rather than the 22K common in Pakistani jewellery, so check the stamp before comparing prices. Hollow chains use less gold, which makes them light and cheaper, but they dent easily and are difficult to repair.
| Type | Advantage | Drawback |
|---|---|---|
| Solid 22K chain | Highest gold value, easy to resell or exchange | Heavier and more expensive |
| Solid 18K chain | Harder and more scratch-resistant | Lower resale value per gram |
| Hollow chain | Looks bigger for its weight | Dents easily; repair may cost more than it is worth |
How to Check a Gold Chain Before You Buy
- Look for the karat stamp, usually on the clasp or a small tag near it: 916 (22K), 875 (21K) or 750 (18K).
- Ask whether the clasp and spring ring are the same karat as the chain; a cheaper clasp lowers the true gold content.
- Weigh the chain yourself on the shop’s scale and note the weight in grams.
- Bend a short section gently: a solid chain feels firm, while a hollow one flexes or feels very light for its size.
- Get a bill showing weight, karat, rate per gram and making charge as separate items.

Selling or Exchanging a Gold Chain
A broken chain is still worth its full gold weight at the day’s rate for its karat, minus kat. Here is what you could expect today, assuming a 12.5% kat deduction:
| Chain sold | Gold value today | After kat (12.5%) |
|---|---|---|
| 5 gram 22K | Rs170,752 | Rs149,408 |
| 10 gram 22K | Rs341,505 | Rs298,817 |
| 1 tola 22K | Rs398,325 | Rs348,534 |
You do not get the making charge back. More on the deduction: what is kat.
