Tops, Baalis, Jhumkas and Chandbalis: Weight and Price
| Earring type | What it is | Usual weight (pair) | Typical making | 22K price range today |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Baby tops | Tiny studs for a child’s first ear piercing | 0.5 – 1.5 g | 15%+ | Rs19,637 – Rs58,910 |
| Tops / studs | A single piece sitting on the ear lobe, for daily wear | 1 – 3 g | 10 – 12% | Rs37,566 – Rs114,746 |
| Baalis (hoops) | Round or oval rings through the lobe | 2 – 6 g | 8 – 12% | Rs73,765 – Rs229,491 |
| Jhumkas | Bell-shaped drops, often hand-made | 4 – 12 g | 15 – 20% | Rs157,092 – Rs491,767 |
| Chandbalis | Crescent-moon earrings, popular at weddings | 6 – 15 g | 15 – 20% | Rs235,638 – Rs614,709 |
| Bridal earrings | Heavy jhumkas or chandbalis matched to a set | 10 – 25 g | 15 – 25% | Rs392,731 – Rs1,067,203 |
Hand-made jhumkas and chandbalis carry higher making charges than machine-made tops and baalis because of the hours of karigar work involved.
What Earrings Can You Buy on Your Budget?
Working backwards from a budget is the easiest way to shop. At today’s 22K rate and a 12% making charge, this is the gold weight each budget buys:
| Budget | 22K gold you get (pair) | What that usually means |
|---|---|---|
| Rs50,000 | 1.3 g | Small tops or baby earrings |
| Rs100,000 | 2.6 g | Daily tops or light baalis |
| Rs150,000 | 3.9 g | Medium baalis or small jhumkas |
| Rs250,000 | 6.5 g | Jhumkas for events |
| Rs400,000 | 10.5 g | Heavy chandbalis or bridal earrings |
Hollow and Lac-Filled Jhumkas: Check the Net Gold Weight
Large jhumkas can be made in two ways that look the same but hold very different amounts of gold:
- Hollow (pressed) earrings are shaped from thin gold sheet. They look big but are light, so they cost less, but they dent easily and are hard to repair.
- Lac-filled earrings are filled with lac (a resin) to give the thin gold body strength. The lac adds weight but has no value, and buyers deduct it when you sell.
Before buying, ask: ‘What is the net gold weight, without lac or stones?’ Insist that the bill shows the gold weight, not just the total weight of the piece.
Screw Back, Push Back or Hook: Does It Change the Price?
| Back type | Common on | Gold weight added | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Screw back (pech) | Tops and studs | About 0.2 – 0.4 g | Most secure; good for children |
| Push back | Light studs | About 0.1 – 0.2 g | Easy to lose; ask for gold, not plated backs |
| Hook (kunda) | Jhumkas and drops | Small | Comfortable for long earrings |
| Lever back | Imported and diamond earrings | About 0.3 g | Secure; common in 18K |
Some shops supply silver or plated backs to keep the price low. Check that the backs are gold and included in the stated karat.
Which Karat Is Best for Earrings?
- 22K (Rs34,150/g): the usual choice for plain and bridal earrings; best resale value.
- 21K (Rs32,598/g): slightly harder, common in Gulf-made earrings.
- 18K (Rs27,941/g): needed for diamond and stone studs because it holds settings firmly.
