Why Gold Rose So Much: Dollar Gold vs the Rupee
Pakistan’s gold rate is roughly the international dollar price converted into rupees. So two forces push it up: a rising world gold price and a weakening rupee. Separating them shows which one mattered more.
| Year | World gold ($/oz, approx. avg) | US$ in rupees (approx. avg) | 24K per tola in Pakistan |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2000 | $279 | Rs53.6 | Rs6,150 |
| 2005 | $445 | Rs59.5 | Rs10,600 |
| 2010 | $1,225 | Rs85.2 | Rs38,500 |
| 2015 | $1,160 | Rs102.8 | Rs45,000 |
| 2020 | $1,770 | Rs161.8 | Rs104,000 |
| 2023 | $1,943 | Rs280 | Rs206,500 |
| 2024 | $2,386 | Rs278 | Rs252,500 |
| 2025 | $3,500 | Rs281 | Rs371,000 |
| Today | $4,120 | Rs277.02 | Rs434,536 |
- 2010 to 2025: the Pakistani tola price rose about 9.6 times. World gold rose about 2.9 times and the dollar about 3.3 times against the rupee. Both mattered roughly equally.
- 2022 to 2023: most of the jump came from the rupee falling to around Rs300 per dollar at its weakest, not from world gold.
- 2025 to early 2026: the rupee was fairly stable, so the surge came almost entirely from the record rally in world gold.
World and exchange-rate averages are rounded approximations for context.

Past performance does not guarantee future returns. Gold can fall for years at a time, as it did between 2012 and 2015 and again in 2026. This is not investment advice.

Lessons from 26 Years of Gold Prices
- Gold protects against rupee weakness. When the rupee falls, the tola price rises even if world gold is flat.
- It does not rise every year. 2013–2015 and 2026 so far show falls of 20% or more from a peak.
- Time smooths the swings. Every ten-year period since 2000 has ended higher than it started in rupee terms, even though some five-year stretches did not.
- Costs matter. Jewellery making charges and kat can cancel a year or two of gains, so 24K bars are better for saving.
- Buy gradually. Buying a fixed amount every month avoids putting everything in at a peak like January 2026. See 24K gold and bars.
