Is Gold a Good Investment in Pakistan? The Short Answer

Yes, as a long-term hedge against rupee depreciation and inflation, but not as a quick profit tool. Over ten years gold has grown about 25% a year in rupees, yet it can fall sharply: today’s rate is Rs138,326 per tola below the record of 29–30 January 2026.

Why Gold Rises Faster in Rupees Than in Dollars

The rupee price of gold is the world price multiplied by the dollar rate. Since 2016 the world price has risen about 3.3 times, while the rupee has weakened from about Rs105 to Rs277 per dollar, about 10% a year. Together they explain most of gold’s gain in Pakistan.

How Much of Your Savings Should Be in Gold?

  • Many financial planners suggest keeping gold as one part of savings, often around 5% to 15%, alongside cash, bank deposits and other investments.
  • Keep an emergency fund in cash or a bank account first; selling gold in a hurry often means accepting a lower price.
  • Families saving for a wedding often hold more gold, but it is better to keep it as bars and convert to jewellery close to the date.
  • Avoid borrowing to buy gold: a price fall can leave you owing more than the gold is worth.

When Is the Best Time to Buy Gold?

No one can reliably predict the next move. Two simple habits reduce the risk of buying at a peak:

ApproachHow it worksExample
Regular buying (averaging)Buy a fixed amount every month regardless of priceRs25,000 a month buys about 0.67 g of 24K at today’s rate
Buying on dipsBuy extra when the rate falls sharply in a dayUse the daily updates to spot falls of Rs3,000 or more
Splitting large purchasesBuy in two or three parts over a few weeksSpreads the risk of one bad day

Tax, Records and Safe Keeping

  • Tax filers should declare gold in their wealth statement at the purchase price; keep every invoice.
  • Pay for large purchases through the bank so the source of funds is documented.
  • Store bars and coins in a bank locker rather than at home.
  • Zakat is due on gold above the nisab threshold that you hold for a lunar year.
