Why Did the Gold Price Stay Unchanged Today?
The All-Pakistan Gems and Jewellers Sarafa Association kept the 24K rate at Rs437,536 per tola because the world price it tracks was also flat at about $4,150 an ounce. Silver was unchanged too, at Rs6,588 per tola.
Two forces cancelled each other out internationally. On one side, the US dollar was near its strongest level this year and long-term US Treasury yields hit multi-decade highs, both of which usually weigh on gold.
On the other side, markets now see only about a one-in-four chance of a US Federal Reserve rate hike in October after last week’s weak jobs report, which limits the downside. A US services survey released on Monday showed the strongest rise in business costs in more than four years, keeping inflation worries alive.
The rupee was steady at about Rs277.05 per dollar in the interbank market, so the exchange rate did not move the local price either.
International Gold Price and the Sarafa Premium
International gold settled at $4,150 per ounce, unchanged on the day. At the interbank dollar rate of Rs277.05, that equals Rs431,159 per tola. The local Sarafa rate of Rs437,536 is Rs6,377 (1.5%) above that world-price conversion, a premium that reflects the cost of dollars and local demand.
