Why Did the Gold Price Rise Today?
The Sarafa association raised the 24K rate by Rs1,200 per tola as world gold climbed $12 to about $4,150 an ounce. That recovers a little over a quarter of Saturday’s Rs4,300 fall.
The main support came from last Friday’s weak US jobs report. Employers added only about 29,000 jobs in September against forecasts near 90,000. Markets now see roughly a 22% chance of a US Federal Reserve rate hike in October, down from about 64% a week earlier, although a December hike is still widely expected. Lower odds of a hike help gold because it pays no interest.
Tension in the Middle East also gave gold some safe-haven support after Yemen’s government announced military operations against the Houthis, which could push oil prices and inflation higher.
The rupee was steady at about Rs277.06 per dollar in the interbank market, so the local move came almost entirely from the world price.
International Gold Price and the Sarafa Premium
International gold settled at $4,150 per ounce, up $12. At the interbank dollar rate of Rs277.06, that equals Rs431,175 per tola. The local Sarafa rate of Rs437,536 is Rs6,361 (1.5%) above that world-price conversion, a premium that reflects the cost of dollars and local demand.
