Why Did the Gold Price Stay Unchanged Today?
The All-Pakistan Gems and Jewellers Sarafa Association kept 24K gold unchanged at Rs437,836 per tola on Thursday 15 October, and the 10-gram rate stayed at Rs375,373. The association’s reference world price was also unchanged at $4,153 an ounce.
The steady rate reflects a round trip in the world market. After hotter-than-expected US inflation data on Wednesday (3.7% a year in September, above the 3.6% forecast), spot gold fell nearly 2% to a five-day low of about $4,073, then recovered about 1% in Asian trading on Thursday to around $4,146, almost back where it started.
Markets now see a higher chance of another US interest rate rise, at about 42% for the 27–28 October Federal Reserve meeting, which is keeping a lid on gold. At the same time, buyers stepped in quickly on the dip, which kept prices inside the $4,100–$4,200 range of recent weeks.
Silver did not recover with gold. It fell Rs212 to Rs6,148 per tola and Rs182 to Rs5,270 per 10 grams, after the world silver price slipped below $59 an ounce for the first time in about two months.
International Gold Price and the Sarafa Premium
International gold settled at $4,153 per ounce, unchanged on the day. At the interbank dollar rate of Rs277.02, that equals Rs431,424 per tola. The local Sarafa rate of Rs437,836 is Rs6,412 (1.5%) above that world-price conversion, a premium that reflects the cost of dollars and local demand.
