Why Did the Gold Price Fall Today?
The All-Pakistan Gems and Jewellers Sarafa Association cut the 24K rate by Rs3,100 to Rs434,436 per tola after world gold fell $31 to about $4,119 an ounce. It is the lowest Sarafa rate in more than a week.
Internationally, spot gold slipped almost 1% to around $4,123 as the US dollar strengthened and US Treasury yields stayed near multi-decade highs. Both make gold, which pays no interest, less attractive.
Traders were also cautious ahead of the minutes of the US Federal Reserve’s September meeting, looking for clues on whether another rate hike is coming. Silver followed gold lower, falling Rs100 to Rs6,488 per tola.
The rupee was steady at about Rs277 per dollar, so the fall came from the world price, not the exchange rate.
International Gold Price and the Sarafa Premium
International gold settled at $4,119 per ounce, down $31. At the interbank dollar rate of Rs277.05, that equals Rs427,938 per tola. The local Sarafa rate of Rs434,436 is Rs6,498 (1.5%) above that world-price conversion, a premium that reflects the cost of dollars and local demand.
