Why Did the Gold Price Rise Today?
The All-Pakistan Gems and Jewellers Sarafa Association raised the 24K rate by Rs900 to Rs440,836 per tola on Tuesday, recovering part of Monday’s Rs2,100 fall, after world gold edged up about $9 to $4,183 an ounce.
The move was small because markets are waiting for US inflation (CPI) data on Wednesday 14 October. September inflation is forecast at 0.6% for the month, up from 0.4% in August; the figure will shape expectations for another US interest rate rise.
In the background, investment demand is firm: inflows into gold exchange-traded funds are at a four-year high, and buyers have been stepping in when world gold dips towards $4,100. A firm US dollar and high bond yields are keeping a lid on rallies.
Silver was unchanged at Rs6,532 per tola, and the rupee was steady at about Rs277 per dollar.
International Gold Price and the Sarafa Premium
International gold settled at $4,183 per ounce, up $6. At the interbank dollar rate of Rs277.02, that equals Rs434,540 per tola. The local Sarafa rate of Rs440,836 is Rs6,296 (1.4%) above that world-price conversion, a premium that reflects the cost of dollars and local demand.
