Why Did the Gold Price Fall Today?
The All-Pakistan Gems and Jewellers Sarafa Association cut 24K gold by Rs900 to Rs434,536 per tola on Wednesday 21 October, after Tuesday’s Rs3,600 fall, and the 10-gram rate fell Rs772 to Rs372,544. Its reference world price slipped $9 to $4,120 an ounce. Over two days the local rate is down Rs4,500.
World gold fell for a fourth straight session, holding near $4,120 in Asian trade. Higher oil prices, driven by Middle East supply worries including risks to Red Sea shipping and Saudi oil facilities, revived inflation concerns.
Those inflation worries keep the US Federal Reserve on course to raise rates again: markets see little chance of a move at the 27–28 October meeting but about an 88% chance of a rise in December. Higher rates make gold, which pays no interest, less attractive, while a steadier US dollar also limited buying.
Silver fell Rs27 to Rs6,207 per tola and Rs23 to Rs5,321 per 10 grams, as world silver dropped about 1% to around $57 an ounce.
International Gold Price and the Sarafa Premium
International gold settled at $4,120 per ounce, down $9. At the interbank dollar rate of Rs277.02, that equals Rs427,996 per tola. The local Sarafa rate of Rs434,536 is Rs6,540 (1.5%) above that world-price conversion, a premium that reflects the cost of dollars and local demand.
