Why Did the Gold Price Rise Today?
The All-Pakistan Gems and Jewellers Sarafa Association raised the 24K rate by Rs600 to Rs435,036 per tola after world gold rose $6 to about $4,125 an ounce. It is a small recovery after Wednesday’s Rs3,100 fall, so gold is still Rs2,500 cheaper than on Tuesday.
Internationally, gold bounced from a two-month low, but the gain was limited. Minutes of the US Federal Reserve’s 15–16 September meeting, released on Wednesday, showed most officials think another interest rate rise is likely by the end of the year. Higher rates make gold, which pays no interest, less attractive.
The US dollar stayed firm and Treasury yields remained near multi-year highs. Middle East tension kept safe-haven demand alive, but much of that money went into the dollar this time, which capped gold’s rise.
Silver did not follow gold up: it fell Rs120 to Rs6,368 per tola. The rupee was steady at about Rs277 per dollar, so the change came from the world price, not the exchange rate.
International Gold Price and the Sarafa Premium
International gold settled at $4,125 per ounce, up $6. At the interbank dollar rate of Rs277.02, that equals Rs428,515 per tola. The local Sarafa rate of Rs435,036 is Rs6,521 (1.5%) above that world-price conversion, a premium that reflects the cost of dollars and local demand.
