Why Did the Gold Price Fall Today?
The All-Pakistan Gems and Jewellers Sarafa Association cut 24K gold by Rs3,600 to Rs435,436 per tola on Tuesday 20 October, and the 10-gram rate fell Rs3,086 to Rs373,316. Its reference world price dropped $36 to $4,129 an ounce.
World gold slipped about 0.5% on Monday as the US dollar firmed and the 10-year US Treasury yield rose, which makes interest-paying bonds more attractive than gold. Analysts warned that worries about further Fed tightening could keep pushing investors toward bonds in the short term.
Markets expect the Federal Reserve to leave rates unchanged at its 27–28 October meeting, after its September rise, but see about a 90% chance of another rise by December. Oil eased from a five-month high after the US waived some sanctions and tariffs on Russian energy; traders now await next week’s US PCE inflation data.
Silver was unchanged at Rs6,234 per tola and Rs5,344 per 10 grams, even though world silver edged up about 0.4% to around $57 an ounce.
International Gold Price and the Sarafa Premium
International gold settled at $4,129 per ounce, down $36. At the interbank dollar rate of Rs277.02, that equals Rs428,931 per tola. The local Sarafa rate of Rs435,436 is Rs6,505 (1.5%) above that world-price conversion, a premium that reflects the cost of dollars and local demand.
