January 2026: How Gold Reached a Record in Pakistan
World gold crossed $5,000 an ounce for the first time on 26 January and briefly reached about $5,595 within days. In Pakistan the 24K rate passed Rs5 lakh per tola on 21 January and set its record of Rs572,862 on 29–30 January. The main drivers were:
- Central bank buying: China extended its run of monthly gold purchases, part of a wider shift away from the US dollar.
- Safe-haven demand: rising US–Iran tension pushed investors into gold.
- A weaker dollar and rate-cut hopes: markets expected the US Federal Reserve to lower interest rates.
- Fund momentum: trend-following investment funds added to the rally.
The peak did not last. In the last days of January gold lost nearly $1,200 an ounce in two sessions, its sharpest two-day fall since 1983, ending the month near $4,865.
Why the Gold Rate Fell From February to July
After the US–Iran conflict began in late February, oil prices rose sharply. That fed inflation, and markets switched from expecting interest rate cuts to expecting rises. Gold, which pays no interest, lost its appeal:
| Pressure on gold | What happened in 2026 |
|---|---|
| Higher oil prices | Disruption around the Strait of Hormuz pushed fuel costs and inflation higher |
| US interest rate rises | The Federal Reserve raised rates in September and signalled at least one more rise |
| High bond yields | US Treasury yields climbed to their highest levels in more than two decades |
| A stronger dollar | A firm dollar made gold dearer for buyers using other currencies |
By mid-July world gold had settled around $4,000–$4,060 an ounce, the year’s lowest zone, equal to roughly Rs414,357 per tola.
The August Rebound and the October Range
Gold recovered strongly in August, climbing about 15% from the early-month low to a peak on 25 August of roughly Rs484,980 per tola. It eased again in September, touching a seven-week low on 28 September as oil and bond yields rose, and in October it has moved within a range of about $4,100 to $4,200 an ounce while markets wait for US inflation data.
