Gold Markets in Gilgit
Gilgit sits where the Gilgit and Hunza rivers meet, on the trade route to China. Its jewellers are concentrated in:
| Area | What you will find |
|---|---|
| Raja Bazaar and the main city bazaars | Traditional jewellers, karat testing and repairs |
| Main roads and commercial areas | Showrooms with ready-made designs |
| Skardu and Aliabad (Hunza) bazaars | Local markets for Baltistan and Hunza |
Shop names and charges change over time, so visit at least two jewellers and ask for the gold rate and the making charge as separate figures.
River Gold of Gilgit-Baltistan
Gilgit-Baltistan is one of the few places in Pakistan where gold is still washed from rivers by hand. Families of the Sonewal community move along the Indus, Gilgit and Hunza rivers, separating fine flecks of gold from sand with wooden rockers.
| Fact | Detail |
|---|---|
| Who pans | Mostly nomadic Sonewal families, including women and children |
| Where | Sand bars of the Indus, Gilgit and Hunza rivers, where heavier gold settles |
| How much | Very small amounts; a good day may yield a tiny bead worth a few thousand rupees |
| Health risk | Mercury is often used to collect the gold and is highly toxic |
| Where it is sold | To jewellers in Gilgit and nearby towns |
The government has identified several possible commercial gold deposits in the region, but most local jewellery is still made from bullion bought at the national Sarafa rate.
How Raw River Gold Is Priced When Sold
Natural gold is never pure: it contains silver and other metals, so a jeweller tests it and pays for the pure gold it contains, minus a refining margin. At today’s 24K rate, 1 gram of raw gold is worth roughly:
| Tested purity | Pure gold in 1 g | Value before refining margin |
|---|---|---|
| 80% | 0.80 g | Rs29,804 |
| 85% | 0.85 g | Rs31,667 |
| 90% | 0.90 g | Rs33,530 |
| 95% | 0.95 g | Rs35,392 |
Purity varies from river to river, so always ask for a test before agreeing a price. See how tests work in how to check gold purity.
Selling or Exchanging Gold in Gilgit
When you sell jewellery in Gilgit, the jeweller values it at the day’s rate for its karat and then deducts kat, traditionally 1 ratti per masha (12.5%), for solder, alloy and wear. 24K bars from a recognised dealer are usually bought back without kat.
| You sell | Gold value today | Kat (12.5%) | Cash you receive |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 tola of 22K | Rs398,325 | − Rs49,791 | Rs348,534 |
| 1 tola of 21K | Rs380,219 | − Rs47,527 | Rs332,692 |
| 2 tola of 22K | Rs796,649 | − Rs99,581 | Rs697,068 |
| 1 tola 24K bar | Rs434,536 | Usually none | Rs434,536 |
Ask for a written offer and compare two jewellers, especially for raw or old gold. More on the deduction: what is kat in gold.
