What Is 20K Gold?

20 karat gold contains 20 parts pure gold and 4 parts other metals, usually copper and silver, out of 24. That makes it 83.3% gold, written as the fineness mark 833.

Feature20K gold
Pure gold content83.3% (20 ÷ 24)
Hallmark833 or 20K
Pure gold in 1 tola9.72 g
ColourRich yellow, slightly paler than 22K
HardnessHarder than 22K, softer than 18K: holds shape well in daily wear
Where it is standardisedIndia’s Bureau of Indian Standards hallmarking grades include 20K (833)

In Pakistan, 20K is uncommon as a declared karat. Most jewellery is sold as 22K or 21K, and 18K is used for diamond and white gold pieces. You are most likely to meet 20K in jewellery bought in India, in some older family pieces and when a piece sold as 21K tests lower.

20K vs 21K vs 22K: How Much Less Should You Pay?

Because each karat is a fixed share of pure gold, the price gap is predictable. Today it looks like this per tola:

KaratPurityPrice per tolaDifference from 20K
22K (916)91.67%Rs398,325+Rs36,211
21K (875)87.5%Rs380,219+Rs18,106
20K (833)83.3%Rs362,113–
18K (750)75%Rs325,902−Rs36,211

Every one-karat step is worth 1/24 of the 24K rate, about Rs18,106 per tola today. If a jeweller charges the 21K rate for a 20K piece, you overpay by that amount on every tola. For a full comparison of the common karats, see 24K vs 22K vs 21K gold.

When ’21K’ Jewellery Tests as 20K

Many buyers first hear of 20K when they sell. An electronic karat meter (XRF tester) in a Sarafa shop reads the surface metal and gives a figure such as 20.6K or 20.9K. Readings below 21 are common in older or Gulf-style jewellery with a lot of solder.

Meter readingPure goldValue of 1 tola today
21K87.5%Rs380,219
20.75K86.5%Rs375,693
20.5K85.4%Rs371,166
20.25K84.4%Rs366,640
20K83.3%Rs362,113

Ask to see the meter reading, and ask whether it will be used instead of a flat kat deduction. Applying both a low reading and full kat means paying for the same loss twice.

19K, 12K and Other Karats: Price Per Tola

People also search for karats that are rarely sold in Pakistan. The same rule applies to all of them: karat ÷ 24 × the 24K rate.

KaratFinenessPer tolaPer gramWhere you see it
19K791Rs344,008Rs29,494Rare; some imported and Portuguese-style jewellery uses about 19.2K (800)

12K500Rs217,268Rs18,628Low-cost and fashion jewellery; half gold
10K417Rs181,057Rs15,523Common in the US; not used in Pakistani markets

What Is the Price of ‘1 Carat’ Gold?

‘1 carat gold’ is usually a mix-up between two words. A karat measures gold purity: 1 karat is 1/24 pure, so 1 tola of 1-karat metal would contain gold worth only about Rs18,106. A carat (ct) measures the weight of gemstones such as diamonds: 1 carat = 0.2 grams. Jewellery is never made in 1-karat gold, and a ‘1 carat’ diamond ring is priced by the diamond, not the gold.

Selling 20K Gold in Pakistan

When you sell or exchange 20K jewellery, the buyer values it at the 20K rate and then deducts kat for solder and wear, traditionally 1 ratti per masha (12.5%).

More on the deduction: what is kat in gold. For pieces bought in India, keep the hallmark receipt; it proves the karat and can reduce disputes.
