Why Did the Gold Price Rise Today?
The All-Pakistan Gems and Jewellers Sarafa Association raised the 24K rate by Rs5,900 to Rs440,936 per tola after world gold jumped $59 to about $4,184 an ounce. It is the biggest one-day rise since the Rs4,300 jump on 30 September and wipes out all of Wednesday’s Rs3,100 fall.
Internationally, gold extended its rebound from a two-month low hit earlier in the week. US President Donald Trump said the United States would not attack Iran before the 3 November vote, which eased oil prices and some of the inflation fears that had pushed markets to expect more US interest rate rises.
US Treasury yields are still close to 24-year highs and minutes of the Federal Reserve’s September meeting showed most officials expect another rate rise by the end of the year, so analysts describe the move as a recovery rather than a new uptrend.
Silver rose Rs144 to Rs6,512 per tola. The rupee was steady at about Rs277 per dollar, so the rise came from the world price, not the exchange rate.
International Gold Price and the Sarafa Premium
International gold settled at $4,184 per ounce, up $59. At the interbank dollar rate of Rs277.02, that equals Rs434,644 per tola. The local Sarafa rate of Rs440,936 is Rs6,292 (1.4%) above that world-price conversion, a premium that reflects the cost of dollars and local demand.
